The Grinder takes things you no longer need and gives back part of what they were made of. Tools, weapons, coats, charms and companion gear give back a share of their materials and spirits; stacks of materials give back what made them, or spirits; and creature parts grind into their creature's spirit. How big a share comes back depends on the Grinder's tier.
Building a Grinder
The Grinder is on the TECHNOLOGY page of the build menu (B). It costs 6 Wood, 8 Stone, 1 Water spirit and 3 Earth spirits, and must be built in A Goddess's Land. E at it to open its window.
The share that comes back
| Tier | Name | What comes back |
|---|---|---|
| I | Grindstone | 50% |
| II | Treadle Grinder | 70% |
| III | Spirit Mill | 90% |
Upgrade it from UPGRADE in its window. See Table Upgrades for the costs.
Using it
- Pick things from the list on the left to put them in the hopper. A stack goes in whole; you can lower the number after.
- The WHAT COMES BACK panel shows what you will get before you grind.
- Press GRIND, then press it again within 4 seconds to be sure. Grinding can't be undone.
The list shows your items first, then CREATURE PARTS (each marked with the spirit it gives, and boss trophies marked TROPHY), then other MATERIALS.
What can go in
- Everything in your pack, except what you are wearing or holding, the plain raincoat, legendary things and anything you have marked as a favourite (unmark it in your pack first).
- Everything in your own stores (chests, crates and so on) in the Goddess's land the Grinder stands in. Stacks are taken from your pack first, then from the smallest piles in your stores.
What comes back
Things you made at a bench
Each weapon, tool, coat, charm or piece of companion gear made at a bench remembers what it cost when it was made. Grinding it gives back that share of each material and each spirit. If it was made at a finer table that took less, it gives back a share of the smaller cost.
- A material from an Any-group comes back as the group's first member (Any Grass as Grass, Any Fur as Fox Fur, Any Tooth as Tooth).
- A lined coat gives back the 3 creature parts of its lining at the share, as parts, not as spirits.
Things you found, bought or were given
A thing with no record of its cost gives back only spirits: 40% of its value, times the share. They are split between the elements of what it is made of: by its metal, stone things as Stone, bronze as Copper Ore, iron and steel as Iron Ore, and endurium as Endurium. A thing with no metal counts as Hide if it is a coat, and as Wood otherwise.
Spirits bound into a thing
Spirits bound into a thing at the Spiriting Table also come back at the share, on top of the rest.
Stacks made at a station, and arrows
A stack made at a station gives back what made it, as if it had been made at a tier III station (65% of the recipe), times the share. Arrows and other bundles give back their recipe as made at a Master Workshop (70%), times the share. See Smelting and Milling for the recipes.
Example: 10 Bronze Ingots in a Spirit Mill give back 10 x 2 x 65% x 90% = 11.7, so 11 Copper Ore, and 10 x 1 x 65% x 90% = 5.85, so 5 Fire spirits.
Creature parts
A creature's part grinds into spirits of its creature's main element: 4 spirits for each part, and 17 for each boss trophy, times the share. This is rounded to the nearest whole number for each part:
| Grinder | Each creature part | Each boss trophy |
|---|---|---|
| Grindstone (50%) | 2 spirits | 9 spirits |
| Treadle Grinder (70%) | 3 spirits | 12 spirits |
| Spirit Mill (90%) | 4 spirits | 15 spirits |
| Part | Creature | Spirit |
|---|---|---|
| Slick Skin | Scuzz | Earth |
| Wisp Essence | Wraith | Wind |
| Wolf Pelt | Wolf | Wind |
| Bear Claw | Bear | Earth |
| Chupacabra Quill | Chupacabra | Fire |
| Raker Talon | Raker | Wind |
| Werewolf Fang | Werewolf | Earth |
| Mermaid Scale | Mermaid | Water |
| Gnawmother Fang | Gnawmother | Earth |
| Grave Knight's Sigil | Grave Knight | Wind |
| Yeti Pelt, Yeti Tusk | Yeti | Water |
| Rime Feather | Rime Owl | Wind |
| Wyvern Scale, Wyvern Talon | Crag Wyvern | Wind |
| Gargoyle Shard | Gargoyle | Earth |
| Bat Wing | Flitterbat | Wind |
| Cairnback Horn | Cairnback | Earth |
| Boss trophy | Boss | Spirit |
|---|---|---|
| Heartroot | Silvetus | Earth |
| Oathfire Tusk | Giggos | Fire |
| Rime Scale | Nivora | Water |
| Hollow Crown | The Hollow Stag | Wind |
| Fulgurite Glass | Fulgoria | Wind |
Common things creatures also drop, such as Hide, Raw Meat, Teeth, Long Bones, Hollow Antlers, Pearls and Tin Buckets, are not creature parts and grind the ordinary way.
Everything else
Any other stack (raw materials, food, crops and so on) gives back spirits: 40% of its value, times the share, split between the elements that material is made of.
Rounding
Everything in the hopper is added up first and rounded down only at the end, for each material and each element. So a hopper full of small things gives back what they come to together, even where one of them alone would give nothing. If the total is too small to make even one of anything, the Grinder says so and nothing is ground. (Creature parts are the one exception: each part's spirits are rounded on their own, as in the table above.)
Tips
- Upgrade the Grinder before grinding anything valuable: a Spirit Mill gives back 90%, nearly twice a Grindstone's 50%.
- Grind old gear in one go rather than piece by piece, so the leftovers add up before rounding.
- Spare creature parts are an easy source of a single element's spirits.
