Wolf

WOODSCREATURENIGHT

The Wolf is a wild hunter that roams the lands by day and by night in packs of 2 to 4. A pack howls, circles you, and takes turns leaping in to bite. Its coat depends on the land: grey in the woods, white in the highlands, red in the tundra and black in the haunted wood. There are none in the desert.

Where and when

  • Out in the wild, day or night, in every land but the desert. Wolves don't leave at dawn.
  • Now and then (every 70 to 120 seconds there is a chance) a pack of wolves or a bear turns up near you. The chance is lower close to where your world began, and none come while another wild wolf or bear is already near, or while you are in or near a Goddess's land (A Goddess's Land).
  • In the woods, 6 in 10 of these are a wolf pack (the rest a bear); in the highlands, 55 in 100; in the tundra, 1 in 2; in the haunted wood, 3 in 4.
  • A pack has 2 to 4 wolves, or 2 or 3 close to where your world began.
  • Wolves you leave far behind (more than 1100 px away) go their own way.

Health and damage

Its health and damage grow with the number of Jewels you hold (Jewels): each Jewel adds 70% of its base health and 40% of its base damage. Health is rounded; damage is before your defence lowers it.

Attacks

Leaping bite

The tell: it stops, lowers its tail and snarls at you (0.5 seconds). Then it leaps (0.34 seconds), aiming a little ahead of where you are heading, up to 56 px. If it reaches you, it bites for 18 damage with no Jewels and pushes you back a little.

  • Parry: press right-click or R as it reaches you. It yelps and runs off.
  • Block: a guard held up earlier blocks the bite, and you take 6 damage instead.
  • Jump: the bite only lands if you are low to the ground, so a Space as it leaps carries you over it.

Behaviour

  • The howl: the first time a wolf hunts you, it stops and howls (1.6 seconds) before closing in.
  • Circling: the pack runs circles round you, each wolf at its own distance. If something is in the way, a wolf comes round to you first.
  • Taking turns: only one wolf of a pack leaps at a time. After a bite, the next one waits 0.8 to 1.6 seconds.
  • Running away: a wolf that has lost more than 70% of its health runs from you instead of circling.
  • A blow flinches it, unless it is in the middle of a leap.
  • In a peaceful world, wolves still come, but they never turn on you, even when struck.

How to fight it

  • Keep turning to face the wolf that stops and snarls: that one is about to leap.
  • A parry sends the wolf running, which thins out the pack for a few seconds.
  • Weak wolves run, so finish them with a ranged weapon such as the bow if you want their pelts.

Taming

Wolves can also become companions: if you carry raw meat or fowl and walk up calmly, a wild wolf lets you near. See Taming and the Wolf companion.

In online play, its health grows with the number of players within 400 px of it (checked once a second): 30% more with two players, 60% with three, 90% with four and 120% with five. One game runs each wolf and everyone sees the same pack; a wolf may go after any player, and every player's blows count the same. See Online Play.
