Taming

GUIDECOMPANIONS

Every wild animal can be tamed: the deer, fox, rabbit, bird, raven, frog, sheep, cow, hen, wolf and bear. You need that animal's own treat. Carry it, walk up to the animal slowly, and give it the treat: one treat is enough, and the animal is yours.

Making treats

Treats are made at a crafting table, on its TREATS tab. Each animal has its own treat, and each treat has two to four recipes to choose from. Treats stack to 20.

  • The small animals' treats (hen, rabbit, bird, frog) are made at any crafting table, even one out in the wild.
  • The other animals' treats (deer, fox, raven, sheep, cow, wolf, bear) can only be made at a crafting table in a Goddess's land.

"Turnips", "Grain", "Carrots" and "Emberberries" in a recipe mean that crop in any grade.

How to tame an animal

  1. Carry the animal's treat.
  2. Walk up to it. Don't run (Shift) and don't swing a weapon: that startles it. While you carry its treat, it lets you come near and watches you.
  3. When you are close, E offers it the treat. The treat arcs over, it eats, and hearts pop up.
  4. One treat fills its trust completely. It is tamed with a burst of hearts, and a window asks you to name it (up to 14 letters; it suggests a name).

Your new animal has its own build and one to three traits (see Companions). It keeps its coat: now and then a wild animal has a rarer colour, and you keep that colour.

Wolves and bears

Wolves and bears are wild hunters that attack you (see Wolf and Bear). While you carry a wolf's or bear's treat and walk, one you haven't struck lets you come within reach instead of attacking. Then give it the treat as you would any other animal. A wolf or bear you have hit won't let you near.

Where it goes

  • With no companion: it becomes your companion (A NEW COMPANION) and follows you.
  • With a companion already: it heads home to your Goddess (A NEW FRIEND) and joins The Herd. This needs a Goddess; without one, an animal won't take your treat while you have a companion.

When it doesn't work

  • You keep all you can. You can keep 5 animals (your companion and your herd together), plus 4 for each Jewel you hold, up to 25. When you are full, no wild animal will take a treat. The message tells you how many you keep.
  • Nowhere to keep another. You already have a companion and no Goddess: build one (see A Goddess's Land).
  • It runs off. You ran, swung a weapon, or (for a wolf or bear) struck it.
  • Wrong treat. Only the animal's own treat works. Plain food doesn't tame anything.
Trust from an older feeding fades slowly once you stop: after 30 seconds without a feeding, it drops by a little each second. With a treat this doesn't matter, as one treat is enough.
In online play, any player can tame a wild animal, and the animals kept at home belong to the world. The limit on how many animals you keep counts your own companion and the world's herd.
