A Goddess's Land

GUIDEBUILDING

A Goddess marks a square of land as yours. Inside it you can build anything, your Crafting Table makes every recipe, and you can make her your home, so you wake beside her after a fall or a faint. She comes in three forms: the Effigy, the Statue and the Monument. Each bigger form has more land.

Raising your first Goddess

Open the build ring with B and go to the TECHNOLOGY page. Your first Goddess is the Goddess Effigy. She can be built anywhere (outside any land), as long as her land won't touch another Goddess's land or a village's land. Once she stands, her land is shown on your map.

What her land allows

  • Building. Walls, floors, tables, stations, stores, furniture and decor can only be built inside a Goddess's land. Outside it, only camp things go up: the Crafting Table, Signpost, Torch, Campfire, Bedroll, Wall Torch, Candles, Moonlight and the Goddess herself. Elsewhere the game says "Beyond the Goddess's reach. Build within her land."
  • Crafting. A Crafting Table outside any Goddess's land makes only TOOLS and the small animals' TREATS. Inside her land it makes everything.
  • Stores count. When you build or craft, the materials in every crate, chest and trunk in the land you stand in count as yours, even ones off the screen.
  • Tenants. A Room to Let sign only works inside your Goddess's land. See Tenants.

Her three forms

Her land is a square on the grid. It reaches the given number of tiles out from her footprint in every direction. You may have a few of each form, and one more of each for every Jewel you hold (see Jewels).

The Statue and the Monument give off light. From a Monument you can travel to any other Monument, once you have more than one.

Her window: home, upgrade and travel

E at one of your Goddesses to open her window.

  • MAKE HOME: you wake beside her after a fall or a faint. Her window says YOUR HOME once she is.
  • UPGRADE: raises an Effigy to a Statue, or a Statue to a Monument, for the full cost of the next form. The window shows how far her land will reach and how many you may have afterwards. She needs room round her to grow. Building the bigger form right over her raises her in place too.
  • TRAVEL (Monuments only): go to another of your Monuments.

Once you have raised a Goddess to a bigger form, the build ring offers only that form for new ones.

Where she may stand

  • One Goddess to a base: a new Goddess's land may not overlap the land of any other Goddess, yours included ("Your Effigy already watches over this land. Build further off.").
  • Her land may not meet a village's land.
  • She always stands on the ground, on the first story.
  • If you already have as many of a form as you may, the game says where the nearest one stands and how to have more.

Moving her

The MOVE tool can pick her up and set her down elsewhere for free, and her land goes with her. Be careful: building pieces in her old land that no other Goddess still covers are destroyed, with nothing given back. Camp things that are allowed outside her land stay, and anything kept in a destroyed store spills out on the ground. See Moving and Painting.

Taking her down

To take a Goddess down, use DISMANTLE on her, then again within 4 seconds to be sure. The first press warns you how far her land reaches and which tenants will move away. Then:

  • You get her own cost back.
  • Everything else built in her land comes down with her, in a wave from her outward, unless another Goddess's land covers it. Nothing is given back for those pieces. What was kept in stores spills out where they stood.
  • Tenants living in her land pack up and move away.
  • If she was your home, you no longer have one.
Before you take a Goddess down or move her, DISMANTLE what you want to keep: dismantling a piece gives back everything it cost, but losing it with her land gives back nothing.
In online play, a Goddess belongs to the player who set her down, and so does everything built in her land. Each player counts their own Goddesses toward the limits above. Only the owner can take her down. The owner can make other players builders, who may build and use everything in the land; anyone else may not build there, open its doors, use its tables, stores or beds, or pray at her. Different players' lands may not meet. See Building for the full list.
