Moving and Painting

GUIDEBUILDING

Two tools under the build ring let you change what you have built without taking it apart. MOVE picks a piece up and sets it down somewhere else, for free. PAINT colours walls, floors, doors, windows, stairs, roofs and fences, and is free in every colour but one.

Opening the tools

Open the build ring with B. MOVE, REPAIR, PAINT and DISMANTLE are buttons under the ring: a click shows what the tool does and a second click uses it. With the ring open you can also press M for MOVE or P for PAINT. Press Escape to stop.

Move

Aim MOVE at anything of yours that is built (the same things DISMANTLE would take: a wall, door, window, fence or gate on its line, a floor, a roof, stairs, or any prop) and click to pick it up. Then click where it should go. It costs nothing, and nothing is lost:

  • Everything in a store (crate, chest, trunk, rack, tank) goes with it.
  • A station's work in progress goes with it.
  • A sign's words and a piece's colour go with it.

While carrying a piece, R turns walls and big stations, the wheel changes the story, and Escape puts it back where it was.

What can't be moved

  • A village's pieces ("That's the village's. Leave it be.").
  • A wall with something standing on it, or a floor with something standing on it: move what is on top first.
  • A bed a tenant sleeps in (find them another bed first), and a Room to Let sign with a tenant behind it (evict them at the sign first). See Tenants.
  • Anything in another player's land, unless you are their builder.

Moving a Goddess

A Goddess can be moved too, and her land goes with her. Building pieces in her old land that no other Goddess still covers are destroyed, with nothing given back. Camp things that are allowed outside a Goddess's land stay, and so do a village's pieces. Anything kept in a destroyed store spills out on the ground. See A Goddess's Land.

Look under

When a piece of furniture stands on a carpet, aiming MOVE (or DISMANTLE) at it picks the furniture. Press R to switch the outline to the carpet underneath, and again to switch back. See Carpets.

Paint

Choose PAINT, pick a colour, and click a piece of your own: a wall, floor, door, window, stairs, roof, fence or gate. It takes the colour, keeping its own light and shade and detail. Paint the same colour on it again to strip it back to how it was. Paint is only for these building pieces, not for furniture or other props.

Change the colour with C, or on PAINT's page in the build ring. A small swatch beside the piece's name shows the colour chosen.

Lichen Patches come from Gargoyles and, now and then, from rocks broken in the Rocky Highlands. Lichen Gold is also a dye for things you make at a bench.

Other colours

Some pieces come in colours of their own, chosen when you build them, for free and with no dye. Pick the colour on the piece's page in the build ring, or press C while placing it:

  • Beds and bedrolls: 8 blanket colours.
  • Carpets: 8 colours for each of the 3 designs.
  • The Moonlight: 8 colours of light.

To change one of these later, dismantle it (you get everything back) and build it again in the new colour.

In online play, you can move and paint only in your own land, or in the land of a player who made you their builder. Everyone sees what you move and the colours you paint.
