The Gargoyle is an old carved guardian of granite, part lion and part hound, with small stone wings on its back. It sits on the crags of the highlands like a statue and comes to life at night when you come close. It swipes with its claws, pounces from a distance, and when it is hurt it turns back to stone, when only heavy blows can hurt it.
CONTENTS
Where and when
- In the highlands, at night. No more than two are about at once.
- In the highlands' dungeons of the Mild tier and harder. See Dungeons.
At dawn it settles back into a statue where it stands and is gone, like the other night creatures (Day and Night).
Health and damage
Out in the world, its health and damage grow with the number of Jewels you hold (Jewels): each Jewel adds 70% of its base health and 40% of its base damage. Health is rounded; damage is before your defence lowers it.
| Jewels held | Health | Pounce damage |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 76 | 26 |
| 1 | 129 | 36 |
| 2 | 182 | 47 |
| 3 | 236 | 57 |
| 4 | 289 | 67 |
| 5 | 342 | 78 |
In a dungeon, its health and damage follow the dungeon's tier and the Jewels you hold instead.
The statue
It sits up on its haunches, perfectly still. The tell: now and then a trickle of stone dust falls from it, and the tip of its tail twitches. Come within 46 px, or strike it, and it wakes, shaking off dust. The first blow you land on it while it sits as a statue does 50% more damage.
Attacks
Damage below is with no Jewels.
Swipe
Up close (within 30 px, in front of it), it slashes twice quickly with its claws: 13 damage each.
- Parry: press right-click or R as a claw lands. It staggers for 0.7 seconds.
Pounce
From 44 to 130 px away, when it can see you and the way is clear, it crouches (the tell), then springs and glides down on its stone wings to land where you are heading. The landing does 26 damage.
- Parry: press right-click or R as it lands. It staggers for 0.7 seconds.
- Dodge: if the pounce misses everyone, it lands open for 1 second, and your blows do 25% more damage.
Stoneskin
When it falls below two thirds of its health, and again below one third, it turns back to stone for 2 seconds. While it is stone:
- Light blows clink off and do nothing.
- Heavy blows crack it and do double damage: a plunge, a heavy or critical blow, or any blow of the greatsword or war hammer.
Then it bursts out of the stone with a shove: 4 damage to anyone within 22 px. You can't jump over the shove.
Behaviour
- It prowls up close to you on foot.
- Only heavy blows make it flinch.
- When it loses you, it waits 7 seconds, then settles back into a statue.
How to fight it
- Open with your hardest blow on the statue: it does 50% more.
- Step aside from the pounce and hit it while it is open.
- When it turns to stone, either back off and wait 2 seconds, or crack it with heavy blows for double damage.
