Mattock

TOOLCRAFTING TABLE

The Mattock is an adze blade and a pick on one haft. It is the tool you start with: it fells trees, breaks rock and ore, and sweeps up grass, flowers and mushrooms as it swings. It can hit creatures too, but weakly.

In-game description

A stone adze blade and a stone pick lashed across an ash haft. The blade fells trees; the pick breaks rock and ore, if it is hard enough.SHOWN ON ITS CARD

Swinging

Press click or F to swing; hold click or F to keep swinging. One swing takes 0.5 seconds at a SWING of 100%. It has no combo, running attack, plunge or special: it swings the same way every time.

POWER: wood and rock

The POWER on its page is what one blow takes off a tree or a rock. Oaks stand 16 and pines 20; rock 20, copper 60, iron 180 and endurium 540. Each tier of rock above the mattock's metal cuts a blow to 20% (copper is soft: a stone mattock works it without the cut). The sister trees (copper beech, ironwood, rimewood, ghost birch) work the same way: a mattock behind the tree's metal barely marks it. See Metal Tiers and Rocks and Ore.

As a weapon

Against creatures a blow deals its metal's strength, not its POWER: 1 for stone, 1.3 bronze, 1.5 iron, 1.8 steel, 2.2 endurium. A blow knocks small creatures back and out of their wind-up. Craft a real weapon as soon as you can (see Weapons).

SWING is 100% in every metal.

These are the numbers of a plain one with nothing bound in it. Spirits bound at the Spiriting Table and traits raise them. Edge is how many swings that land it takes before it goes dull (see Edge).

Made at a Crafting Table. Each metal needs that metal opened first (see Metal Tiers); from bronze up, the haft is made of the metal's sister wood, sawn into planks. A finer table takes less.
