Tools and weapons come in five metals: stone, bronze, iron, steel and endurium. You start with stone. Each better metal opens when you clear a lair in one more land, and each hits harder, keeps its edge longer and can hold more spirits.

What opens each metal
The first time you clear a land's lair, you earn that land's Jewel. The number of lands whose lair you have cleared decides which metals you can make:
| Lands cleared | Metal opened |
|---|---|
| None | Stone |
| 1 | Bronze |
| 2 | Iron |
| 3 | Steel |
| 4 | Endurium |
It doesn't matter which lands, or in what order. Until a metal is open, its recipes say "Locked: clear a lair in two lands first" (or however many are needed). The same rule opens that metal's charms, coats, dishes and building kits.
How much stronger each metal is
| Metal | Strength | Edge | Spirit tiers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone | × 1 | × 1 | 4 (up to 2 in one element) |
| Bronze | × 1.25 | × 1.5 | 6 (up to 3) |
| Iron | × 1.5 | × 2.2 | 9 (up to 4) |
| Steel | × 1.8 | × 3 | 13 (up to 5) |
| Endurium | × 2.2 | × 4.5 | 20 (up to 5) |
- Strength multiplies a weapon's POWER. The War Hammer gains 20% more from each step than other weapons (a stone hammer has 5.5 POWER, an endurium one 13.4).
- Edge multiplies how many blows it lasts before it goes dull. See Edge.
- Spirit tiers: how many element tiers a new weapon is dealt in all, and the most any one element can have. See Spiriting Table.
| Metal | Sword | Greatsword | Daggers | War Hammer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone | 2 | 4 | 1.4 | 5.5 |
| Bronze | 2.5 | 5 | 1.8 | 7.2 |
| Iron | 3 | 6 | 2.1 | 8.8 |
| Steel | 3.6 | 7.2 | 2.5 | 10.8 |
| Endurium | 4.4 | 8.8 | 3.1 | 13.4 |
| Metal | Bow | Blade Staff |
|---|---|---|
| Stone | 2.4 | 3 |
| Bronze | 3 | 3.8 |
| Iron | 3.6 | 4.5 |
| Steel | 4.3 | 5.4 |
| Endurium | 5.3 | 6.6 |
These are the POWER of plain weapons with nothing bound in them.
The mattock and the rocks
For the Mattock, each metal hits three times harder on wood and rock: 4 a blow for stone, 12 bronze, 36 iron, 108 steel, 324 endurium. Rock is graded the same way: plain rock 20, copper 60, iron 180, endurium 540. Each tier the rock is above the mattock cuts a blow to 20%, so the right mattock always takes about five blows:
| Ore | Mattock needed |
|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Stone (copper is soft) or better |
| Iron Ore | Iron or better |
| Endurium | Steel or better |
The sister woods
From bronze up, a tool or weapon's haft, grip or limbs are made of its metal's sister wood, sawn into planks at a Sawhorse. Each grows on its own tree, as hard to fell as the matching ore is to break: a mattock a tier behind the tree barely marks it.
| Metal | Wood | Tree | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Beechwood | Copper beech | The Woods, away from the start |
| Iron | Ironwood | Ironwood | The Rocky Highlands |
| Steel | Rimewood | Rimewood pine | The Tundra, far out |
| Endurium | Ghostwood | Ghost birch | The Haunted Wood, far out |
The trees stand 48, 144, 432 and 1,296 against a mattock's blows. Their saplings can be planted at home and grow in 3, 3.5, 4 and 4.5 days. See Trees.
Ingots
From bronze up, the Crafting Table takes ingots where stone took ore: Bronze Ingots, Iron Ingots, Steel Ingots and Endurium Ingots, smelted at a Clay Furnace. See Smelting and Milling. A metal weapon is mended with 1 ingot of its own metal (see Edge).
