Rocks and Ore

GUIDEWORLD

Rocks give you Stone, and some carry ore: Copper Ore, Iron Ore or Endurium. You break them with the Mattock. Each kind of ore is about 3 times harder than the one before it, and needs a mattock of the matching metal to break in a sensible number of blows.

Breaking rock

Hold the Mattock and press click or F against a rock. It cracks a little more with every blow, then bursts into stone (and its ore, if it has any). Spirits rise from it and drift to you, and now and then a Spirit Gem drops. A rock you break stays gone in that world; there are always more further out.

A plain mattock's blow on rock depends on its metal. Spirits bound into the mattock raise it further.

A mattock behind a vein's metal does only a fifth as much for each tier it's behind. Copper is the one exception: a Stone Mattock works it at full strength, so it takes 15 blows. Everything else gets slow fast:

  • A Bronze Mattock on an iron vein: 75 blows. A Stone Mattock: about 1,125.
  • An Iron Mattock on an endurium vein: 75 blows. A Bronze Mattock: about 1,125.

The rock tells you when your mattock is too weak: "it barely gives" when you're one tier behind, "it won't give" when you're two or more behind.

Rock is hard on the edge. Each swing that hits rock wears the mattock's edge by 2 points, and 3 times more for every tier the mattock is behind (6 points one tier behind, 18 two tiers behind). A tree only wears it by 1.

In the Rocky Highlands, 1 in 6 rocks and veins you break also gives a Lichen Patch.

Ore veins

A vein is a rock with coloured ore showing in it. It gives the same 4 to 6 stone as a plain rock, plus its ore.

Ore is smelted into ingots at the furnace: see Smelting and Milling. Which metals you can use depends on your Jewels: see Metal Tiers.

Spirit Gems

Any rock you break has a small chance to drop a Spirit Gem as well. Better ore gives better odds.

XP from rock

Breaking rock teaches Endurance (see Stats): 5 XP for a plain rock, 10 for a copper vein, 20 for iron and 40 for endurium.

Pebbles

Pebbles lie on the ground next to rocks. Press E on one (or hit it) and it bursts into 1 Stone and 2 Earth spirits. Pebbles you pick up come back every two days. See Gathering.

Other ways to get stone and ore

  • Under water: lakebeds have rocks (2 Stone), copper veins (1 Stone and 2 Copper Ore) and old crates (1 Wood and one of Copper Ore, Iron Ore, a Pearl, a Tooth or Stone). See Gathering.
  • Spirit powers: the mattock's Forgefall pairing (Fire and Earth) breaks any rock its metal can work in one blow, and plain rocks often give 1 ore as well (usually copper, sometimes iron, rarely endurium). A War Hammer with a rock-breaking spirit power can break rock too. See Spiriting Table.
  • Creatures and chests: some creatures carry ore, and chests in dungeons hold it. See the Bestiary.
In online play, a rock that one player breaks is gone for everyone in the room. Its stone, ore and spirits go to the player who broke it.
