The Wanderer has eight stats. Each goes from level 0 to level 99 and grows by earning XP for it. You earn XP mostly by eating cooked food, and also by crafting, working, fishing, fighting and defeating creatures. Press K to see your stats, their levels and what teaches each one.
The eight stats
Every stat grows evenly from level 0 to level 99, so each level counts the same.

|---|---|---|---|
| Health | Your max health | 100 | 999 |
| Stamina | Your max stamina | 1,000 | 3,000 |

| Attack | Adds to the damage you deal | No bonus | +250% damage |
| Sprint | Your speed on foot and swimming | Your own pace | +200% (3 times as fast) |
| Jump | How high you jump | Your own height | +200% (3 times as high) |
| Swim | How long you can hold your breath, and how fast it comes back | 12 seconds | 60 seconds, back 200% faster |
| Endurance | How many of a material fit in one pocket (a stack) | 50 | 999 |

| 99 | +200% | 60 seconds | 999 |
Levelling up
- XP is counted per stat. When a stat has enough XP, it goes up a level and the rest carries over.
- A level up is its own moment: time slows, the camera eases in, and the stat's name and new level appear with what it now gives. If several stats go up together, they show in one list.
- Level ups wait while a menu, your pack or a text box is open, and play when it closes.
- When a Health level goes up, your current health goes up by the same amount as your max.
- Level 99 shows as MASTERED. XP for a mastered stat is not kept.
XP each level takes
Each level asks for more XP than the one before: 120 XP to reach level 1, and 8,820 XP to go from level 98 to 99.
| From level | XP for the next level | Total XP to reach this level |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 120 | 0 |
| 10 | 480 | 2,730 |
| 20 | 960 | 9,590 |
| 30 | 1,560 | 21,800 |
| 40 | 2,280 | 40,540 |
| 50 | 3,120 | 67,030 |
| 60 | 4,080 | 102,460 |
| 70 | 5,160 | 148,020 |
| 80 | 6,360 | 204,930 |
| 90 | 7,680 | 274,370 |
| 98 | 8,820 | 339,770 |
| 99 | None (mastered) | 348,590 |
Spirit Gems used on a stat make every level of it take less XP from then on. The more gems a stat has had, the cheaper its levels, but each gem adds less than the one before.
How each stat is trained
The stats screen lists every way to train each stat, sorted into Cooking, Eating Raw, Crafting, Slaying, Work and Fishing.
Eating (the main way)
- Every cooked dish gives XP to one, two or three stats: from 120 XP in all (a Boiled Egg) up to 1,000 XP in all (500 to each of two stats, from the dishes made of legendary fish). See Cooking and Food Groups.
- A dish's grade multiplies its XP: Poor 0.75 times, plain 1 time, Fine 1.2 times, Prime 1.4 times, Heirloom 1.75 times (see Dish Grades).
- Eaten raw, food gives a little: 10 to 20 XP (for example, raw meat gives 15 Attack XP).
- Being sleepy cuts the XP food gives by the same share as it cuts your stamina cap (see Sleep).
- Eating in a cozy home gives more XP (see Comfort).
- You can only eat three meals before you're full (see Fullness).
Crafting
Making things at a bench teaches two stats, the same amount every time for the same thing. Better metal teaches more: stone 1 time, bronze 2 times, iron 3 times, steel 4 times, endurium 5 times. Some examples at stone:
| Made | XP |
|---|---|
| Sword | 30 Attack, 15 Defense |
| Greatsword | 30 Attack, 20 Endurance |
| Daggers | 25 Attack, 20 Sprint |
| War Hammer | 25 Defense, 20 Attack |
| Blade Staff | 25 Attack, 20 Jump |
| Bow | 25 Attack, 15 Jump |
| Mattock | 25 Endurance, 15 Stamina |
| Fishing Pole | 30 Swim, 10 Endurance |
| Runner's Raincoat | 20 Sprint, 15 Stamina |
| Tank's Raincoat | 20 Defense, 15 Health |
| Olympian's Raincoat | 20 Jump, 15 Swim |
Garden tools and other plain things teach the same at every metal.
Work
| Work | XP |
|---|---|
| Felling a tree | 6 Stamina |
| Breaking a stump | 3 Stamina |
| Clearing a bush | 2 Stamina |
| Breaking a rock | 5 Endurance |
| Breaking copper ore | 10 Endurance |
| Breaking iron ore | 20 Endurance |
| Breaking endurium ore | 40 Endurance |
| Gathering or breaking small things | 1 Endurance |
| Breaking something on a lake bed | 4 Swim |
Fishing
- A fish: 10, 20, 40, 80 or 160 Swim XP, by how rare it is.
- Gear on the line: Attack XP (25 and up, more for rarer finds).
- Materials on the line: Endurance XP (10 and up).
- A spirit: 15 Stamina XP. Bones: 2 Swim XP.
See Fishing.
Fighting
- Every hit with a weapon gives 1 XP to each of that weapon's two stats: Sword Attack and Defense; Greatsword Attack and Health; Daggers Swim and Sprint; Blade Staff Jump and Sprint; War Hammer Defense and Endurance; Bow Endurance and Stamina.
- Every kill gives XP by what it was, the same at any level. A few examples: a Gnawling 15 Attack; a Kobold 20 Attack and 15 Sprint; a Yeti 60 Health, 50 Attack and 40 Defense; a lair boss such as Nivora 150 Health, 150 Attack and 80 Endurance. Each creature's page gives its XP.
- Hunting animals teaches a little: a rabbit 5 Stamina, a deer 20 Stamina, a cow 22 Health, a fox 12 Sprint.
- Hitting a Training Dummy gives 1 Attack XP a hit, up to 50 a day.
Tips
- Cook. A single plain Hearty Stew gives 320 Health XP and 200 Stamina XP, more than defeating most creatures.
- Sleep before a big meal: sleepiness cuts the XP your food gives.
- Pick the stats you care about most for your Spirit Gems.
