The Gnawling is a small round fuzzball of black fur with yellow eyes and a big mouth. It is one of the most common night creatures: it turns up in every land after dark and in every dungeon. It bounces up to you in little hops from one side, crouches, then leaps and bites.
Where and when
- At night, in every land. Gnawlings are one of the most common night creatures, and they come in groups of 1 to 3.
- In every dungeon: see Dungeons.
- The Gnawmother gives birth to them, and the Hollow Stag calls them up out of the ground.
Like the other night creatures, it leaves at dawn (Day and Night).
Health and damage
Out in the world, its health and damage grow with the number of Jewels you hold (Jewels): each Jewel adds 70% of its base health and 40% of its base damage. Health is rounded; damage is before your defence lowers it.
| Jewels held | Health | Bite damage |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 8 | 13 |
| 1 | 13 | 18 |
| 2 | 18 | 23 |
| 3 | 23 | 29 |
| 4 | 29 | 34 |
| 5 | 34 | 39 |
In a dungeon, its health and damage follow the dungeon's tier and the Jewels you hold instead.
Attacks
Leaping bite
When it is close, it flattens itself to the ground and trembles with its mouth opening (0.45 seconds), then leaps at you (0.32 seconds in the air) and snaps shut as it reaches you. The bite does 13 damage with no Jewels and knocks you back a little. It then bounces off you, rests for 0.45 seconds, and starts again.
- Parry: press right-click or R just as it reaches you. It is knocked back head over heels and the bite does nothing.
- Block: a guard held up earlier blocks the bite, and you take 4 damage instead.
- Jump: the bite only lands if you are low to the ground, so a Space as it leaps carries you over it.
Behaviour
- It moves in short hops, coming at you from one side rather than straight on. When it is too close, it hops back to set itself before the next leap.
- Every blow that lands knocks it away tumbling.
- When a Gnawmother shrieks, every Gnawling near her comes running at you.
How to fight it
- Watch for the crouch: that is your moment to parry, jump or swing.
- In a group, keep moving so only one can leap at a time.
- Sweeping and spinning attacks catch several at once.
