Online Play

GUIDEONLINE

You can play any world with friends online: up to five Wanderers in one world at once. An online world lives in a room on Elsewild's server, so it keeps going without you, and friends can come in with its code or from their friends list. Online play needs a free account (see Accounts and Cloud Saves); playing alone does not.

Opening a world to others (hosting)

There are three ways to host:

  • A new online world: on the title screen choose PLAY WITH OTHERS, then HOST A WORLD and NEW ONLINE WORLD. Or, on the NEW WORLD screen, set PLAY to ONLINE. The world opens online the moment it is made. See Getting Started.
  • A world you already play alone: in that world, open Settings, choose ONLINE, go to the SHARING page and press OPEN with the world's name on it.

On the SHARING page you choose:

ChoiceOptionsWhat it does
Who may comeBY CODEOnly those you give the code to can come in.
FRIENDSYour friends see it on their list and can join. Nobody else can, even with the code.
PUBLICListed in PUBLIC WORLDS for anyone to join.
At most2, 3, 4 or 5How many players can be in it at once, you included.
PasswordOptionalPlayers must type it to come in. Friends you invite don't need it.

Once it's open, the page shows the world's code (six letters or digits) with a COPY button, and who is here now.

Joining a world

Open the online window (PLAY WITH OTHERS on the title, or Settings, ONLINE in a world). Its pages are:

  • PUBLIC WORLDS: every public world open now, with its host, its rules and how full it is. A lock marks one with a password.
  • FRIENDS: add a friend by their account name (ADD A FRIEND, then ASK); they accept or decline. Your friends list shows who is on and which world they are in, with a JOIN button. Invites from friends show here too, with JOIN and NO. In a world, an INVITE button sends your world to a friend who is on.
  • JOIN BY CODE: type the code a friend gives you, and the password if it has one.

The first time you join someone's world, you choose who you are there. Your Wanderer in each online world (levels, pack, companion and look) belongs to that world and comes with your account on any device. The online worlds you play are listed with your other worlds in WORLDS on the title screen.

An account can be in a room on one device at a time.

The host

The player who made the world (its maker) is its first host. On the SHARING page the host can:

  • Change who may come, the player limit and the password.
  • MAKE HOST: hand hosting to another player. The maker can TAKE HOST back at any time.
  • SEND OUT: remove a player. They can't come back for 15 minutes.
  • Rename the world (Settings, HELP, THIS WORLD).

The maker can also STOP SHARING, which brings the whole world home to their device as a solo world again. Other players leave with LEAVE THIS WORLD, which takes them to the title screen.

What is shared

Shared by everyone in the worldYour own
The land, what's cut, mined and picked up, and its regrowthYour look, levels and XP
Everything built, Goddesses and their land, pensYour pack, what you wear, your spirits and seeds
Stores, dropped things, garden beds and cropsHealth, stamina, fullness, sleepiness and food effects
The clock, weather and snowYour companion
Lairs cleared, Jewels and what they openYour map and its markers
Settlers, the herd, villages and their stockYour settings and keys
  • Creatures are each run by one player's game (the nearest) and seen by everyone else. When players move apart, a creature is handed to whoever is now nearest.
  • Hits are decided by the attacker: if a blow lands in your game, it counts. Every player's blows, parries and effects count the same.
  • When two players reach for the same thing (a log, a drop, the last egg in a nest, a store's pocket), the room decides and the first one wins; nothing is doubled or lost.
  • Pauses and slow-motion moments (hit-stop, level-ups, catches) play only for the player they belong to. The shared world keeps time.
  • The tutorial never runs in a room.

Creatures grow tougher with more players

A creature's health (not its damage) goes up with the number of players near it: within 400 pixels for most creatures, 1,200 for bosses out in the world.

Players nearCreaturesBosses
1NormalNormal
230% more health45% more health
360% more85% more
490% more2.2 times
52.2 times2.5 times

Down a dungeon or a lair, each extra player adds a share instead: 60% more health per extra player in a Breeze dungeon, rising to 80% in a Fatal one; in a lair, 60% (a plain lair), 72% (Fatal) or 80% (Abyssal). A lair's boss counts everyone who has come in through its gate. See Dungeons and Lairs.

Whose land: building rights

In a shared world each Goddess belongs to the player who set her down, and her land is theirs: everything built in it is theirs, whoever built it.

  • On the SHARING page, beside each player in your world, MAKE BUILDER lets them build on your land, and REMOVE takes it back. Your builders are kept even when they aren't there.
  • A builder may build, take down, paint and use what's there, as the owner does. Only the owner can take a Goddess down.
  • Anyone else may walk in, read the signs and mend what's broken, but may not build, take down or paint anything there (not even a campfire or a torch), open its doors or gates, use its tables, stations, stores or beds, pray at its Goddess, or work its garden beds. Its stores don't count toward their own bench.
  • Lands may not meet, and the number of Goddesses you may have is counted for each player.

See A Goddess's Land.

Sleeping

In a room, the night is skipped only when everyone is asleep. While you wait in bed, the screen shows how many are asleep (for example "ASLEEP 2 / 4"). Move, press Esc, press B on a controller or tap GET UP to get out of bed. See Beds and Sleep.

Chat

  • In a room, press Enter to open a line (on a controller, hold View; on touch, tap CHAT in the column by the map). Enter sends it, Esc closes it.
  • A message can be up to 100 characters.
  • What's said shows as a speech bubble over the speaker's head, for everyone in the world. A player shows up to three bubbles at once; each lasts 4 to 9 seconds, longer for longer messages.
  • Messages from players you can't see appear in a short list over the map.

The daily limit

The online service has a shared daily limit for everyone who plays. If it is reached, no one new can get in and open rooms close within about a minute, until midnight (UTC). Your world is kept safe in its room. Solo worlds are not affected and can still be played.

If the connection drops

  • A world that lives in a room keeps only part of itself on your device (the places you were last near), so it can't be played without its room. If the room can't be reached, the game stops behind a window and tries again every 10 seconds; RETRY NOW tries at once.
  • If you are signed out, it asks you to sign in to bring the world back. Newgrounds and Dark Stories sign you back in by themselves where the game is played on their sites.
  • Your account stays signed in for 120 days after you last used it.
