The Guide and Tutorial

GUIDEBASICS

Elsewild has two kinds of help built in. The tutorial is a short guided start in which the Goddess shows you your first steps, one task at a time. The Guide is a book you can open at any time, with a page for each part of the game. Both show your own keys, controller buttons or touch buttons.

The tutorial

When it starts

  • It starts by itself, a moment after you arrive, in the first world anyone makes on a device to play alone. If you are signed in and have already been offered it on another device, it doesn't start again.
  • It never runs in an online room. While you are in one, it waits, hidden.
  • You can start it at any time from Settings, HELP, START THE TUTORIAL (or PLAY IT AGAIN), from inside a world, above ground and playing alone.

Skipping it

Yes, you can skip it. Every one of the Goddess's cards has a SKIP TUTORIAL button; press it twice to be sure. You can also stop it from Settings, HELP, STOP THE TUTORIAL (pressed twice).

The steps

The tutorial has 8 parts, shown as a count on its task card:

  1. Welcome and spirits. What spirits are and where they are counted.
  2. Make a Crafting Table. Break twigs and pebbles for 4 Wood and 2 Stone, then set the Crafting Table down from the build menu.
  3. Craft a Stone Mattock at the table, and take it in hand.
  4. Raise a Goddess Effigy with wood and grass from your mattock, then pray at her so she becomes your home.
  5. Build a Spiriting Table in her land. The Goddess gives you what it needs.
  6. Bind your mattock. Open the Spiriting Table, learn about tiers and pairings, and bind Earth to wake Heavy Head: your mattock strikes twice as hard, so trees fall in half the chops.
  7. Build a small home three tiles by two: floors, walls, a door, a torch and a roof. The Goddess gives you 45 Wood to start. Then step inside and feel it become cozy.
  8. Place a bed inside, to sleep through the night.

Each task shows what is still needed, counted live, and how to do it. Gold marks in the world show what to gather, a glow shows what to use, and an outline shows where to build. If you already have something a step asks for (a table, a Goddess, a home), the step points you to it instead of asking you to make another.

  • While the tutorial runs, the day stays at morning and the weather stays clear.
  • If something it needs goes missing (you take the table down, for example), it takes you back to that step.

Playing it again (practice)

Started again from Settings, the tutorial is practice. What the Goddess lends you, and what you build and make together during it, goes back at the end. What you gathered yourself is yours to keep.

The Guide

Open it from Settings, HELP, OPEN THE GUIDE. The world waits while it is open. Topics are listed down the left; each has a small moving picture drawn with the game's own art and a few short paragraphs. A gold "!" marks a topic the first time what it covers turns up in your game.

Move between topics with the up and down keys (the D-pad, or a tap), scroll with the mouse wheel (a swipe, or the right stick), and go back with Esc (B, or BACK).

The Guide has 23 topics:
