Standing in a proper home with a light makes you cozy. Meals eaten while cozy do more: 25% more, plus 5% for each level of comfort, up to 50% more at comfort 5. Comfort is how many different kinds of things are in the room. Being cozy also dries and warms you.
Becoming cozy
You are cozy while you stand in a room that has all of these:
- A floor under every tile of the room.
- Walls on every side. Doors and windows count as wall.
- Cover overhead: a roof, or a floor on the story above.
- A light you have built on the same story, in the room or right beside it: a Torch, Wall Torch, Standing Lamp, Candles, Moonlight, a Campfire, or a lit station such as the Spiriting Table.
A COZY badge shows while you are cozy, and "cozy" rises over you when you first step in. Hover the badge to see your comfort.
What cozy does
Better meals
Every dish or food eaten while cozy gets a bonus to:
- The stamina it gives.
- The health it heals.
- The XP it teaches.
- How strong its good effects are, and how long all its effects last. (A bad effect, such as feeling queasy, is not made stronger, but it does last longer.)
When you eat, a note such as "cozy: +35%" shows the bonus. See Cooking and Food Groups.
| Comfort | Meal bonus |
|---|---|
| 0 | 25% more |
| 1 | 30% more |
| 2 | 35% more |
| 3 | 40% more |
| 4 | 45% more |
| 5 | 50% more |
Dry and warm
Being cozy dries you and warms you much faster than being outside: being soaked through or chilled to the bone wears off in about 8 seconds. Only standing close to a fire is quicker (about 6 seconds). Being cozy also keeps the cold from chilling you. See Status Effects and Weather.
Comfort
Comfort goes from 0 to 5. It is the number of different kinds of things standing in the room you are in, on the story you are on. Two of the same thing count once.
- Every piece of furniture, table, station, store and decoration that stands on the floor counts: a Bed, a Crafting Table, a Potted Plant, a Chest, a Bookshelf, and so on.
- Carpets count, all designs together as one kind.
- Lights don't count (one is needed to be cozy at all), and neither does anything hung on a wall, such as a picture.
So a lit room with a bed, a chest, a potted plant, a bookshelf and a carpet has comfort 5.
Decorations
The DECOR, INDOORS and OUTDOORS pages of the build ring hold things made to enjoy. Each one that stands on the floor of a cozy room adds a kind to its comfort.
Standing pieces
| Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
| Training Dummy | Shows the damage of every hit and your damage per second over the last 10 seconds. Each blow teaches a little Attack, up to 50 a day. |
| Gramophone | E plays a piece of the game's music you have heard, over and over, until you choose another. |
| Telescope | At night, E pins the nearest dungeon or lair you haven't found, within 150 tiles, on your map. Once a night. |
| Rain Barrel | Fills while it rains (about one can every 40 seconds of steady rain, faster in a storm) and holds 10. Fill your watering can at it. |
| Hot Tub | Room for five to soak. See below. |
| Pet Bed | A bed for a companion. See Beds. |
| Fountain | A stone basin; birds come to drink from it by day. |
| Bookshelf | Three shelves of books, each one filled a little differently. |
| Wind chimes | See below. |
Pictures
Pictures hang on the face you see of a wall running east and west (not on a door, window, fence or stairs). The wide ones hang across two walls side by side. Taking a wall down takes what hangs on it down first.
Portrait of You, Companion Portrait, Painting of a Land (one for each of the five lands you have set foot in), Still Life, Spirit Tapestry, Home Sampler, Map of Home (drawn from the land round where it hangs), Starry Night and the Boss Trophy.
Wind chimes
Three wind chimes stand outside on curled iron hooks and sway with the wind, ringing more often in a gust. Indoors they hang still.
| Chime | Sound |
|---|---|
| Brass Wind Chimes | Low and long |
| Sea Glass Chimes | A soft clink |
| Bell Chimes | Bright and sweet |
The hot tub
The Hot Tub is a round tub of hot water 3 tiles by 2, with five seats. E to climb in to the nearest free seat, and E again to climb out. While you soak:
- You are dried and warmed at once.
- You heal 2% of your health every second.
- You count as cozy, with comfort of at least 1, even if the tub stands outside.
Steam rises off it, more on a cold night.
The Boss Trophy
The Boss Trophy is a lair boss's head mounted on a round slab of log, hung on a wall. Choose which boss on its page in the build ring. Each one costs 4 Wood, some spirits, and 1 of that boss's trophy, which it drops when you beat it in its lair:
| Boss | Trophy needed |
|---|---|
| Giggos | Oathfire Tusk |
| The Hollow Stag | Hollow Crown |
| Fulgoria | Fulgurite Glass |
| Nivora | Rime Scale |
| Silvetus | Heartroot |
E at it to read when you first beat that boss, your fastest fight and the hardest lair. Taking it down gives the trophy back. See Boss Trophies.
Tips
- Eat your best dishes at home: at comfort 5 every meal is worth 50% more.
- A kitchen with a bed, a chest, a plant, a bookshelf and a carpet reaches comfort 5. Adding a second bed doesn't help; adding a different piece does.
- Come in out of the rain to dry off fast.
