Settings opens from the title screen, or in a world with Tab on a keyboard, Menu on a controller or MENU on a touch screen. Settings are kept for every world on the device, not for one world. Down the left are the sections: SOUND, DISPLAY, COMFORT, CONTROLS, HELP and FEEDBACK, then RESUME, ONLINE and MAIN MENU (in a world) or BACK (on the title). Each section has a DEFAULTS button that puts it back as it came.
Sound
| Setting | Choices | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master volume | Muted to 100%, in 5% steps | 80% | All the game's sound. |
| Music | Muted to 100% | 65% | Music in the world plays now and then, with quiet gaps between pieces. |
| Sound effects | Muted to 100% | 85% | Footsteps, weapons, gathering and every other effect. |
RESTART SOUND starts the game's sound again if it ever goes quiet.
Display
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Display | WINDOWED, FULLSCREEN (the desktop app also has MAXIMISED) | In a browser, fullscreen or a window (F11 works too). In the desktop app, fullscreen is borderless, so switching away is instant. Not shown in the phone app. |
| View | 2D, 2.5D | 2D is the top-down view. In 2.5D the ground tilts away from you, so things further off look smaller. 2.5D is harder on slower devices. A new player starts in 2.5D. |
| Resolution | AUTO, 100%, 75%, 50% | How many of the screen's pixels the game draws. Fewer run faster and use less battery, and the pixel art stays sharp. AUTO: all of them on a computer, 75% on a phone or tablet. |
| Frame rate limit | AUTO, 30, 60, NONE | The most frames a second the game draws. Fewer use less battery and keep a phone cooler. AUTO: 60 on a phone or tablet; on a computer, as many as the screen shows. |
| Visual quality | LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH | LOW: the simplest look, with the classic light. MEDIUM: warm firelight, each place with its own colour, shadows by day, dust in a dungeon's light. HIGH: also a soft glow round the brightest things, and creatures' limbs moving at the full frame rate (30 a second below HIGH). Default: HIGH on a computer, MEDIUM on a phone or tablet. |
| Light style | BEAUTIFUL, CLASSIC | BEAUTIFUL (the default): at night and in dungeons, soft light from every fire and lamp, shadows cast by trees, walls and everyone near a light, a warm haze round fires and a cool blue night. It needs MEDIUM or HIGH quality. |
| Light & water | OFF, ON | ON: light coloured by the time of day, what stands on a bank mirrored in the water, lamps and fires shining on it, and a glow on the brightest things. Default: ON on a computer, OFF on a phone or tablet. |
| 2.5D distance | NEAREST, NEAR, MEDIUM, FAR, FARTHEST | How far 2.5D draws the world before it fades into haze. Nearer runs faster. Default: FARTHEST on a computer, NEAR on a phone or tablet. |
| Ledges (2.5D) | RAISED, FLAT | In 2.5D, rises and ledges stand up from the ground (RAISED, the default). FLAT draws them as 2D does, and is quicker on some computers. |
| Pixels | FIT, CRISP | FIT (the default) fills the window. CRISP scales by whole pixels, so every pixel is the same size; a small border may show. |
| Camera | CLOSE, NORMAL, FAR, FARTHER | How close the camera sits. The world and the HUD grow or shrink with it; menus keep their size. |
| UI size | SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE | How large your bars, the map, your spirits and the buttons by them are. Menus and touch buttons keep their own sizes. |
| Frame rate | HIDDEN, SHOWN | Shows frames a second and how long each takes, small at the top of the screen. |
Comfort
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Screen shake | FULL, LOW, OFF | How hard the view shakes and punches in on big blows. |
| Damage numbers | ON, OFF | The numbers that pop up where a blow lands. |
Controls
On a keyboard or controller, this section lists every action's key or button, to change (see Controls), and CONTROLLER ON or OFF. On a touch screen it also has:
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stick | WHERE YOU TOUCH, STAYS PUT | WHERE YOU TOUCH: the stick comes to wherever your thumb lands on its side of the screen, and follows it. STAYS PUT (the default): the stick always sits in its corner. |
| Running | TAP, THEN HOLD, PUSH FAR | TAP, THEN HOLD: tap the stick, then hold it to run (a plain push walks). PUSH FAR (the default): pushing the stick to its edge runs. |
| Touch controls | SMALL, NORMAL, LARGE | How big the stick and buttons are. |
| Layout | STICK LEFT, STICK RIGHT | Which side the stick is on; the buttons go to the other side. |
| Controller | ON, OFF | Play on a controller. Its own button marks show. |
Help
- The tutorial: start it, stop it, or play it again. See The Guide and Tutorial.
- This world: shows the world's name and lets you RENAME it (only the host can rename an online world).
- The Guide: the in-game book of every system.
- Share play stats (ON or OFF, default ON): sends how long and how you play, solo or online, and what broke if the game ever breaks, anonymously, so the team can keep it running well. See Accounts and Cloud Saves.
Feedback
FEEDBACK sends a report to the team: a bug, an idea or anything else.
Leaving a world
MAIN MENU (pressed twice to be sure) saves the world and goes back to the title screen. ONLINE opens the online window for this world (see Online Play).
