Stamina is the Wanderer's energy, and it is also how hungry you are. It shows as the ribbon under your health. Almost everything you do spends a little of it: every hop, swing, jump and stroke. It does not come back on its own. You fill it again by eating.
CONTENTS
Max stamina
- Your max stamina is set by the Stamina stat: 1,000 at level 0, rising evenly to 3,000 at level 99.
- Raincoats and Charms add a percent on top.
- Being sleepy lowers your cap: how high food can fill you. After a whole day awake the cap is a third lower; after two days, two thirds lower (see Sleep). The part you lose shows as dark stripes on the ribbon.
What spends stamina
| Action | Stamina |
|---|---|
| A walking hop | 0.5 |
| A running hop | 1 |
| A swimming stroke | 0.5 |
| Diving under water | 1 |
| A jump | 1.5 |
| A dodge | 2 |
| A swing of a weapon or the mattock | 0.5 |
| A bow shot | 0.5 (a fully charged shot 2.5) |
| Using a tool, or casting a fishing line | 0.5 |
| Spins and whirls | 2 to 2.5 |
| A running attack, or a leaping attack | 2.5 |
| The war hammer's pound | 3 |
| A weapon's special | 2 |
| Being hit | As much stamina as the health the blow took |
- Being soaked makes everything cost up to 30% more (see Weather).
- Some coats make everything cost less (for example, Endless Wind: 20% less). See Raincoats.
- Riding a companion costs less stamina than hopping (see Riding).
Getting stamina back
| Way | How much |
|---|---|
| Cooked dishes | 12% to 90% of your max stamina at plain grade (for example, Grain Porridge 60%, Hearty Stew 70%) |
| Dishes made from legendary fish | Fill it to the cap |
| Raw food | 2.5% to 7% of your max stamina (for example, raw meat 6%, berries 5.5%) |
| A companion cow's warm milk | 25% of your max stamina, once a day, when you're under 60% (see Companions) |
| Dying | You wake with at least 30% of your cap |
| Fainting | You wake with a third of your cap |
- A better grade gives more stamina. Eating in a cozy home gives more too (see Comfort).
- Sleeping does not fill your stamina. It gives your cap back; you still need to eat.
- You can eat three meals before you're full. Spending 50 stamina makes room for one more (see Fullness).
Well fed
A small wedge on the stamina ribbon shows the hunger line: 70% of your cap. While your stamina is above it you are well fed, and every 25 stamina you spend heals 5% of your max health.
Starving
When your stamina reaches 0 you are starving ("starving" appears over you):
- You can only walk. You can't run.
- Every swing runs at half speed.
- Walking and swimming are still free, but jumping, swinging, dodging and other moves take health instead. Each takes its stamina cost as a percent of your max health (a jump takes 1.5%, a dodge 2%).
- If that takes the last of your health, you faint. You wake at home the next dawn with half your health, a third of your stamina cap and without a quarter of your loose spirits (see Health).
Eat anything to stop starving.
A world without hunger
When you make a new world you can turn Hunger off. Then your stamina never runs down: you have endless stamina. Food still heals you and teaches XP.
Tips
- Walk rather than run on long trips: a running hop costs twice as much.
- Eat before you drop under the hunger line, and you heal as you work.
- Carry a few cooked dishes. They give far more stamina than raw food.
In online play each player has their own stamina, fullness and hunger.
