The Wanderer needs to sleep. The longer you stay awake, the sleepier you get: your stamina cap drops and food does less for you. Sleeping in a Bed or Bedroll skips the rest of the night, heals you fully and clears your sleepiness.
CONTENTS
Sleepiness
Time awake is counted in days of the world's clock (a day and its night take about 6 minutes at the normal day length; see Day and Night).
| Time awake | Stamina cap | What food gives |
|---|---|---|
| Less than a whole day | Full | All of it |
| A whole day | 33% lower | 33% less |
| Two whole days or more | 67% lower | 67% less |
- Each step comes all at once: you see "so tired", and the SLEEPY badge appears. Its tip says how long you have been awake and when the next step comes.
- The stamina cap is how high food can fill your stamina. Sleepiness doesn't take away stamina you already have; it stops food filling you past the lower cap.
- What food gives (XP, healing, and how strong and how long its effects are) is cut by the same share. The stamina a dish gives is not cut.
- A dish made from a legendary fish clears your sleepiness when you eat it.
Where and when you can sleep
Stand at a bed or bedroll and press E (SLEEP).
- From dusk until morning you can always sleep.
- By day you can only sleep once you're sleepy (a whole day awake). Otherwise you see "not tired yet".
- You can't sleep with a night thing close by ("not with them so close").
- A Bed needs its house whole around it: walls and a roof. Otherwise you see "the wind's coming in".
- A Bedroll can go anywhere, but it wears through after one night. A worn-through bedroll can't be slept in again.
- A tenant's bed is theirs, not yours.
See Beds for how to make them.
What a night's sleep does
- The screen darkens and the night passes. You wake at dawn and get out beside the bed.
- Your health is full again.
- Your sleepiness is gone, so your stamina cap is back to full.
- Poison is cleared.
- The night things that were out have gone.
- Your stamina is not filled. Eat after you wake up.
- 35% of the time, a short thought appears as you wake.
Sleeping is the way to skip a dangerous night. It also heals you fully, which makes it the cheapest way to recover after a hard fight.
Where you wake after a fall
Your bed is not where you wake after dying or fainting. You wake at your Goddess (see Health).
Tips
- Sleep before cooking a big meal: sleepiness cuts the XP and healing your food gives.
- Carry a bedroll on long trips, so you can sleep far from home.
- Clear the area of night things before you lie down.
In online play the night only passes when every player in the room is asleep. When you get into bed you stay there, waiting, until the others are in bed too. While you wait you can get up again (GET UP, or move). Each player sleeps in their own bed: sleeping in a bed makes it yours ("your bed now"), you can only have one, and you can't use a bed someone else is sleeping in, or another player's bed unless you built it. You see other players asleep in their beds. If you faint in a room, the room's clock and its night things don't change for the others.
