Spirit Gems are rare stones you find and never make. Give one to one of your Stats and every level of that stat needs less XP from then on, permanently. There are three kinds: Spirit Gem I, Spirit Gem II and Spirit Gem III. They are not the same as Spirits, which you count by element and spend.
What they do
Giving a gem to a stat is called attuning. Each gem adds points to that stat:
| Gem | Points | XP every level needs (this gem alone) |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit Gem I | 1 | about 4% less |
| Spirit Gem II | 3 | about 11% less |
| Spirit Gem III | 9 | about 26% less |
The XP a level needs is divided by 1 + (the stat's points ÷ 25). Points add up, and there is no limit, but each gem matters a little less than the one before:
| Points in one stat | XP every level needs |
|---|---|
| 1 | 96% |
| 3 | 89% |
| 9 | 74% |
| 25 | 50% (half) |
| 50 | 33% |
| 75 | 25% (a quarter) |
- It counts for the level you are in now and every level after it.
- XP you already have toward your current level stays yours. If that is now enough for the cheaper level, you go up at once (the banner shows how many levels you gained).
- A stat at level 99 (mastered) can't be attuned: the button says MASTERED.
- The stats screen shows each attuned stat's points and how much less XP its levels need.
How to attune a stat
- Pick the gem in your pack (or in a storage chest next to you) and press ATTUNE A STAT (R).
- The stats screen opens with the gem in hand. Choose a stat with the arrows, or pick its star. The page shows what that stat does and what the gem will do to it.
- Press ATTUNE. The gem flies into the stat and its name is shown with "ATTUNED" and how much less XP its levels now need.
Where to find them
Breaking rock
Every rock you break has a small chance to drop a gem. Ore veins have better chances, and the deeper the ore, the finer the gem. The chances are rolled separately, so an iron or endurium vein can drop two gems at once.
| Broken | Spirit Gem I | Spirit Gem II | Spirit Gem III |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain rock | 1.2% | none | none |
| Copper vein | 6% | none | none |
| Iron vein | 8% | 2.5% | none |
| Endurium vein | none | 12% | 4% |
See Rocks and Ore.
Creatures
Three creatures can drop a gem when they fall. In online play, every player who struck it rolls for their own.
| Creature | Spirit Gem I | Spirit Gem II | Spirit Gem III |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gnawling | 4% | none | none |
| Longlegs | 10% | none | none |
| The Hollow Stag | none | Always | 25% |
Chests
Dungeon and lair Chests can hold a gem as one of their main things. Each main thing is rolled from gear, charms, fibers and gems:
| Chest | Main things | Weight for a gem (of 100) |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | 8 |
| Middle | 2 | 15 |
| Rare | 3 (the first is always gear) | 22 |
- A harder dungeon adds 2 to the gem weight for each step of difficulty.
- Each middle or rare chest that gives no gem makes the next middle or rare chest's gem likelier: 5 more weight for each one in a row without a gem (up to 50 more), back to 0 when a gem comes. Small chests don't count toward this.
- One chest never gives the same kind of gem twice.
Which gem a chest gives follows the Jewels you hold:
| Jewels held | Gem I | Gem II | Gem III |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 100% | 0% | 0% |
| 1 | 75% | 25% | 0% |
| 2 | 60% | 40% | 0% |
| 3 | 45% | 40% | 15% |
| 4 | 30% | 45% | 25% |
| 5 | 20% | 45% | 35% |
A chest you hook while Fishing also can hold a gem (of the same kinds by Jewels): a weathered coffer 18% of the time, an iron-bound chest 45%, and a gilded reliquary always.
Villages
Village stalls sell gems (see Traders): a trader's stall can carry one, and a seer's stall several.
Other ways
- A Hoe with the Earth tier V pick Mother Lode: 3% of the beds you till turn up a Spirit Gem I.
- A Sickle with the Earth tier IV pick Mother Earth: 2% of the crops you reap turn up a Spirit Gem I.
- A companion with the Treasure Nose talent at rank 3 or more: 1 in 20 of the things it digs up is a Spirit Gem I. See Talents.
- Some Village Quests give one as a reward.
Other uses
A few things are built with a gem instead of giving it to a stat:
- The Goddess Statue costs a Spirit Gem I, and the Goddess Monument a Spirit Gem II. See A Goddess's Land.
- Upgrading the Augmentation Table costs a Spirit Gem I for its second tier and a Spirit Gem II for its third. See Table Upgrades.
