The Wanderer

GUIDETHE WANDERER

You play the Wanderer: a small traveller in a yellow raincoat with a stiff brim, who has no legs and gets about by hopping. The Wanderer never speaks. Now and then a short thought appears on screen instead. Everything about them grows through eight stats, and they live by three needs: health, stamina (with fullness) and sleep.

Your look

When you make a new world, the WHO YOU ARE part of the new world screen sets how your Wanderer looks:

  • Male or female. This only changes what shows under the hood's brim (the fringe, the lashes, a touch of lip). The coat, hood and size are the same.
  • Hair: 12 colours: brown, chestnut, auburn, orange, blonde, black, silver, rose, crimson, violet, blue and teal.
  • Coat: 10 colours for the plain raincoat: yellow, red, orange, green, teal, blue, purple, pink, white and black.

You can see your choice by day and by night before you start. The look is kept with that world. A crafted coat changes how you look while you wear it (see Raincoats).

Moving

The Wanderer moves in hops. Hold a direction to hop that way. A quick tap makes a short step (from about a quarter of a hop up to a whole one), which helps you line up with things.

Way of movingHops a secondSpeed (level 0)Stamina
Walking2About 29 pixels a second (under 2 tiles)0.5 a hop
Running (hold Shift)3About 71 pixels a second (about 4.5 tiles)1 a hop
  • A tile is 16 pixels.
  • The Sprint stat makes each hop longer and quicker: at level 99 you move 3 times as fast (+200%).
  • You can't run with no stamina left. You can still walk.
  • Wading through shallow water makes your hops shorter and lower.
  • When you are nearly out of stamina, or under 25% of your health, your hops become lower, shorter and slower.
  • Being chilled makes you move up to 18% slower, and feeling queasy makes your hops shorter (see Status Effects).

Jumping

  • Press Space to jump. Hold it for a full jump; let go early for a lower one.
  • A jump costs 1.5 stamina.
  • You keep the speed you jumped with and can steer in the air.
  • The Jump stat raises the height: at level 99 you jump 3 times as high.

Ledges and climbing

The land rises in levels, like terraces (see Lands).

  • A hop takes you up or down one level by itself. The Wanderer hops up onto the ledge.
  • A face two or more levels high can't be hopped. Jump up it, and jump down it.
  • Stairs climb one story in a building (see Stories and Stairs).
  • You can jump onto walls and roofs the same way as onto ledges.

Swimming and diving

  • Walk into deep water and you swim. Each stroke costs 0.5 stamina. Hold Shift to swim faster.
  • You can't swing a weapon or tool while swimming at the surface.
  • In water deep enough, press Space to dive under (1 stamina). Press Space again to come back up. In water that is too shallow you see "too shallow to dive".
  • Under the water you swim freely over the bottom, and you can fight, chop and break things as on land.
  • Your breath lasts 12 seconds at Swim level 0 and 60 seconds at level 99. While you are under, it shows as a row of bubbles beside your health and stamina.
  • When your breath runs out, you lose 20% of your max health every 1.4 seconds until you come up.
  • Breath comes back quickly in the air, and faster with a higher Swim level (up to 3 times as fast at 99).
  • Sprint makes you swim faster too, up to 3 times as fast at 99.

Carrying: your pack

Press I to open your pack. Its pockets sit in rings around the Wanderer. Every pocket holds one item, or one stack of a material.

  • You start with 14 pockets.
  • How big a stack can be is set by the Endurance stat: 50 at level 0, up to 999 at level 99. A few things come in smaller stacks (arrows stack to 100 at level 0).
  • The pack also has pockets for what you wear: your coat, your charms, your lantern and your companion's gear.
  • You can eat from the pack. It stays open while you eat, and what the food gave you shows when you close it.

More pockets

Three packs add pockets, permanently. Make one at the Crafting Table (TRAVEL page), then choose SEW IT IN on it in your pack. They must be sewn in order.

Making a pack also teaches Endurance: 60 XP for the Satchel, 120 for the Traveler's Pack and 240 for the Spirit-sewn Pack. A Packer's Charm can add more pockets and bigger stacks while you wear it (see Charms).

Lanterns

A lantern hangs at your hip in the lantern pocket of your pack and lights the ground around you. It helps you stay out of the dark.

Glass LanternAbout 5 tiles5 minutesMade from 2 Glass, 2 Bronze Ingots, 2 Charcoal
Wisp LanternAbout 7 tiles10 minutesMade from 2 Glass, 1 Endurium Ingot, 3 Wisp Essence
  • The Wisp Lantern also hides you: night things only notice you from 40% nearer.
  • A lantern burns oil only in the dark: never by day, at home on a Goddess's land or in a village. Down a dungeon it always burns.
  • Its light shrinks as the oil runs low. At 10% left you see "your lantern is burning low", and when it is empty it goes out.
  • To fill it, use Lamp Oil from your pack (FILL THE LANTERN). One flask fills a lantern. It fills the lantern you wear, or else the emptiest one in your pack.
  • Lamp Oil: make 2 flasks from 1 fat (raw meat, fowl, frog legs or a fish) and 1 Wood, or buy it: every trader keeps some.
  • A Kobold Candle that drops is about 60% full.

Tips

  • Walk when you don't need to hurry. Running costs twice the stamina a hop, and three hops a second instead of two.
  • Sew in a Satchel early. Six more pockets make a big difference on long trips.
  • Carry a flask or two of Lamp Oil when you travel at night or go down a dungeon.
In online play every Wanderer looks as their player chose. Lanterns, packs and stats belong to each player.
