Crag Wyvern

ROCKY HIGHLANDSCREATURENIGHT

The Crag Wyvern is a falcon-sized wyvern, slate-blue and cream with russet-gold wings, that perches on the crags of the highlands at night. When it spots you it shrieks and takes off. It circles high over you, out of reach of anything but an arrow, then comes down to beat gusts of wind at you or to dive and rake you with its talons.

Where and when

  • In the highlands, at night. No more than two are about at once. It doesn't come into dungeons.

Like the other night creatures, it leaves at dawn (Day and Night).

Health and damage

Its health and damage grow with the number of Jewels you hold (Jewels): each Jewel adds 70% of its base health and 40% of its base damage. Health is rounded; damage is before your defence lowers it.

How it moves

  • Perched: it stands on the crag, looking about and now and then stretching a wing. When it notices you, it shrieks and takes off.
  • Circling: it flies round and round high above you, now and then beating its wings. Up there, only its shadow on the ground shows where it is. While it is high up, only arrows from the bow (and burns) can hurt it; other blows can't reach it.
  • Leaving: if it has been out of a fight for 8 seconds, it flies away.

Attacks

After circling for at least 2.2 seconds, while you are within 220 px, it chooses one of these.

Dive

It folds its wings and stoops at where you are heading, throws its talons forward at the bottom, and climbs away again. The rake does 19 damage with no Jewels. It is most likely to dive when you have stood still for a second or have just swung.

  • Parry: press right-click or R as the talons strike. It is knocked out of the air.
  • As it comes down low, any blow knocks it out of the air.

Gust

It comes down to hover a little way off to one side of you, rears up and beats two great strokes of its wings at you. Each stroke shoves every Wanderer in front of it about 40 px away from it, and near a ledge, that can push you over the edge. The gust does no damage.

  • Guard: holding up your guard (right-click or R) keeps you where you stand.

Knocked down

A hit while it is flying (an arrow while it circles or hovers, or any blow while it is low) knocks it out of the air. It falls and sprawls on the ground for 2.5 seconds, then gets up and takes off again. While it is down, your blows do 25% more damage.

How to fight it

  • A bow is the best answer: shoot it while it circles or hovers, then run in and strike while it is down.
  • Without a bow, keep moving (it likes to dive at someone standing still), and parry or hit it as it comes down.
  • Don't fight it at the edge of a ledge: its gust can push you over. Hold your guard up when it rears up to beat its wings.
In online play, its health grows with the number of players within 400 px of it (checked once a second): 30% more with two players, 60% with three, 90% with four and 120% with five. One game runs it and everyone sees the same wyvern. Its rake strikes every Wanderer in reach and its gust shoves each one in front of it, each in their own game; any player's arrow or blow knocks it down the same way. See Online Play.
