Rime Owl

TUNDRACREATURENIGHT

The Rime Owl is a large white owl that hunts the Tundra at night. It circles high over you, where only its shadow on the snow shows where it is, and drops on you in a fast dive. While it is up in the air, nothing but an arrow can touch it.

Where it appears

Only in the Tundra at night: each time a night creature comes there, there is a 7% chance it is a Rime Owl, with at most 2 about at once. It is not found in dungeons. It may first be seen sitting on the ground, perched.

Health

31 health in the open world with no Jewels held, and 70% more for each Jewel you hold. Its dive grows by 40% for each Jewel.

Attacks

Dive

Its one attack. It hoots (0.75 seconds), then stoops down to where you are going, throws its talons forward and snatches about 0.5 seconds into the dive, then climbs away again. The talons deal about 17 health (no Jewels, before your defence). You can right-click or R the dive: a parry knocks it out of the air.

It chooses when to dive. It waits at least 2 seconds after taking to the air, then dives when you have stood still for more than a second, just after you swing, or once it has circled for 6.5 seconds. It does not dive while you are under a roof or in the water.

Behaviour

  • Perched: it sits on the ground until it notices you (from up to 170 px) or is struck, then takes off (0.7 seconds).
  • Circling: it flies round you about 78 px out and high above, flying over trees, rocks and walls. Only its shadow on the snow is drawn under it; the smaller and fainter the shadow, the higher it is.
  • Out of reach: while it is more than 18 px up, blows pass under it. Only arrows (and burns already on it) reach it.
  • Knocked down: any blow that reaches it while it is circling or diving, and a parried dive, knocks it out of the air into the snow. It lies there for 2 seconds, then gets up and takes off again. It takes 25% more from every blow while it falls, lies there and gets up.
  • If it loses you while circling for 8 seconds, it flies away.

How to fight it

  • With a Bow, shoot it while it circles. A hit brings it down; then close in and finish it while it is in the snow.
  • Without a bow, keep moving so it cannot catch you standing still, and watch for the hoot. Raise right-click or R as it comes down: a parry drops it in front of you, ready to be struck for 2 seconds.
  • A roof over your head stops its dives, so a doorway or a shelter is a safe place to wait for it to come close.
In online play it watches whichever Wanderer it is after: their stillness, their swings and whether they are under a roof. Its dive lands in that Wanderer's own game, and any player's arrow can bring it down.
