Snowkin

TUNDRACREATURENIGHT

Snowkin are small living snowmen with a carrot nose and a tin bucket for a hat. They come in bands of three and stand stock still, looking like ordinary snowmen, until you walk up to them. Then they hop about, pelt you with snowballs and roll into you like bowling balls.

Where it appears

  • The Tundra at night: each time a night creature comes there, there is a 9% chance it is a band of three Snowkin, with at most 6 about at once.
  • Tundra dungeons of Mild difficulty or harder: 15% of the creatures in a Mild one, 10% in harder ones.

Health

20 health each in the open world with no Jewels held, and 70% more for each Jewel. Their blows grow by 40% for each Jewel.

Hiding

A band stands hidden as snowmen. The tell is the carrot: every 3 to 7 seconds it twitches for half a second. A hidden Snowkin wakes when it has noticed you and you come within 50 px, or when you strike it, and as soon as one of the band wakes the others wake too, a moment later. Waking takes about 1.2 seconds.

Attacks

Damage is with no Jewels held, before your defence.

AttackWhat it doesDamageHow to avoid it
SnowballFrom 36 to 170 px away it scoops and throws a snowball (released about 0.6 seconds in) at where you are heading. A small shadow grows where it will land. Only one of a band throws at a time.About 6Step out of the shadow; it cannot be jumped. Three snowballs within 6 seconds leave you chilled for 2 seconds.
RollFrom 18 to 64 px away it tucks into a ball (0.33 seconds) and rolls straight at you at 120 px a second for up to 1.3 seconds. Only one of a band rolls at a time.About 12Sidestep, or right-click or R: a parry bursts the ball. After any roll it bursts and is dizzy for 1.6 seconds.

Behaviour

  • It has no legs and hops, keeping about 85 px from you at its own angle round you, and backing off if you get on top of it.
  • Losing its head: each blow has an 8% chance (35% with a heavy blow) to knock its head clean off. Headless, it gropes about blind for 2.6 seconds, then goes to pick its head up and puts it back on. While its head is off it takes 50% more damage.
  • Fire: any fire blow, and any burn on it, deals double damage.
  • Now and then (1 in 5) a beaten Snowkin also drops its Tin Bucket.

How to fight it

  • Look for the twitching carrot. Strike first while the band is still hidden: the blow lands on a sleeping Snowkin, though it wakes the band.
  • Rush the throwers: up close they are more likely to roll, and a dodged or parried roll leaves one dizzy for 1.6 seconds, free to hit.
  • A heavy weapon knocks heads off far more often, and a headless Snowkin takes 50% more.
  • A fire-spirited weapon makes short work of them.
  • The Crooked Carrot keepsake stops snowballs from chilling you.
In online play a Snowkin's snowballs and rolls strike every Wanderer they reach, each in their own game.
