Where it appears

  • The Desert at night: 55% of the night creatures that come there are Chupacabras.
  • Desert dungeons of every difficulty: about 1 in 3 of the creatures there.

It also goes after village folk and your animals when they are nearer to it than you are.

Health

20 health in the open world with no Jewels held, and 70% more for each Jewel. Its blows grow by 40% for each Jewel.

Attacks

Damage is with no Jewels held, before your defence.

Pounce and drink

From 30 to 72 px away it crouches and raises its quills (0.55 seconds), then leaps up to 70 px at you with a screech (0.4 seconds). If it reaches you while you are on the ground, it clings to your back:

  • the catch deals about 10 health;
  • then it drinks every 0.62 seconds, about 8 health each time, and heals itself a little with each drink;
  • after 2 seconds (3 drinks) it lets go and springs away.

Space as it leaps and it passes under you. A parry (right-click or R as it lands) throws it away. Any blow you land while it pounces or clings knocks it off.

Bite

When you are within 22 px it lunges and bites (0.32 seconds), for about 17 health and a shove. A parry stops it and leaves it reeling for 0.3 seconds.

Behaviour

  • It notices you from up to 160 px. From far off it creeps low toward you; close in it darts from side to side round you.
  • Between attacks it rests 0.6 to 1.4 seconds, and after a pounce it needs half a second to recover.

How to fight it

  • Watch for the crouch and the raised quills: that is the pounce coming. Space it or parry it.
  • If it does cling on, strike at once: the first blow throws it off before it can drink much.
  • Its drinking heals it, so a long fight against a Chupacabra that keeps catching you drags on. Deal with each pounce cleanly.
In online play it clings to whichever Wanderer it catches, and its drinking lands in that player's own game. Any player's blow knocks it off.
