Wild Plants

GUIDEWORLD

Every land is covered in small plants: grass, flowers, mushrooms, berry bushes and, now and then, a crop growing wild. Each one you cut gives itself to pick up, a spirit or two, and sometimes a seed for your garden. Wild plants are where most of your first seeds come from.

Picking plants

Small plants come up with any blow: a swing of the Mattock, a strike of any weapon, or a punch. The mattock sweeps up every small thing its swing passes over. Each plant pops out as one of itself, lying on the ground for you to walk over and pick up (see Gathering).

  • Every plant you cut teaches 1 Endurance XP.
  • A weapon's edge wears by 1 point for each strike that cuts any soft things, however many it cuts.
  • The Sickle cuts the grass in its sweep as it harvests: 1 Grass or Dry Grass each, and 3 in 10 green tufts also give a Grain seed.
  • Plants you cut stay gone in that world; there are always more further on.

A flower, heather, thistle or yucca picked by day may hold a Turnip seed; picked after dusk, a Moon Squash seed. Wildflower Bulbs grow into a bed of flowers that blooms again and again (see Seeds).

Frostbloom is a cluster of ice crystals, not a mushroom, so it doesn't count as a mushroom in recipes. Brown Caps are the mushroom cooks ask for (see Food Groups).

Bushes

Bushes are tougher than flowers: they take 6 damage to bring down. A Stone Mattock does it in 2 blows, a better mattock in 1. Weapons cut them too, and so do your fists, with a few punches. A bush you bring down teaches 2 Stamina XP and stays gone.

Seeds from bushes

  • Bush Cutting: 1 in 2 bushes you bring down (every kind but dead scrub). Planted, it grows into the berry bush of the land it's planted in.
  • Emberberry seeds: about 1 in 2 berry bushes in the woods and brambles in the haunted wood (45 in 100); usually 1 seed, sometimes 2.

Wild crops

Now and then a crop grows wild among the grass. They're rare, so keep an eye out. Cut one like any plant: it gives 1 of its crop, its spirits, and 45 in 100 times its seed (usually 1, sometimes 2). That's how you start growing these crops yourself, without buying seeds from traders.

Tomatoes don't grow wild anywhere; their seeds come from traders.

Spices

The four spices, Emberpepper (Fire), Dewsalt (Water), Stoneroot (Earth) and Galeleaf (Wind), don't grow wild. They come from harvesting beds you've imbued with spirits: at each harvest, every spirit in the bed has a 1 in 10 chance to give its spice at RICH strength, and a 1 in 4 chance at DEEP. See Spirit Soil.

Tips

  • Swing the mattock through a patch of flowers: it takes every one it passes over in a single swing.
  • Pick flowers after dusk if you want Moon Squash seeds, and by day for Turnip seeds.
  • Wild Berries can be eaten as they are.
In online play, a plant or bush that one player cuts is gone for everyone in the room.
