The Rootling is a knobbly root that grows only in the dark. It does not grow at all by day, and grows fast at night. It gives 5 spirits at a Plain harvest (3 of them Earth), more than any other crop.

In-game description
A knobbly root, warm from the soil, its knots like a sleepy little face.SHOWN ON ITS CARD IN YOUR PACK
Growing
- Sow it with the Hoe in a tilled bed and keep the bed watered. It takes about 4.5 days to its first harvest in clear weather.
- It grows only in the dark, at night.
Harvest
Reap it with the Sickle. A harvest gives 1 Rootling and 1 to 2 seeds back (1 more seed at Heirloom), and releases 3 Earth, 1 Water, 1 Wind spirits at Plain grade (more at finer grades: see Crop Grades). Left in the ground more than 3 days after it ripens, it rots.
Where to get seeds
Frostbloom (the Tundra) and Ghostcaps (the Haunted Wood) you pick (18%), new ground you till at full night, and traders in the Tundra and the Haunted Wood. See Seeds.
Notes
- It likes a thick, overcast or foggy night best: that raises its grade score.
- Rootlings are hardy: under snow they keep growing at half pace, and frost does not hurt them.
- At night, a ripe Rootling turns to face you when you come close.
- Fire at DEEP in its soil does not help it: that only lets sun crops grow at night.
