The hen is a small farm bird of the Woods. Tamed, it pecks in a flurry, dodges blows and finds seeds; at home it lays eggs.
Where it lives
The chance that a stretch of land has one, by land:
| Land | Chance |
|---|---|
| The Woods | 14 in 100 |
Animals never appear close to where the world began, or inside a village.
Taming
Make a Hen Treat on the TREATS tab of any crafting table, from 5 Grain, 5 Emberberries or 5 Wild Berries, each with 2 any grass. Carry it, walk up slowly, and give it the treat with E. One treat is enough. See Taming.
As a companion
The forager: in a fight it pecks three times in a flurry, dodges 1 in 3 blows, and draws enemies within about 7.2 tiles to itself. Out walking it scratches up seeds and odds and ends for you.
Its numbers at level 1 and level 20, with STRENGTH 4, VITALITY 4 and WITS 5 and no traits, talents or gear:
| Ability | Level 1 | Level 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Pecks | 0.45 damage, three at a time | 1.97 damage, three at a time |
| Dodges | 1 in 3 blows | 1 in 3 blows |
| Health | 12 | 39 |
It has five talents of its own to learn (see Talents), and its own gear: the Cavalier's Finery (see Companion Gear).
At home
In your herd it pecks at enemies that come too near. It gives Eggs: 1 to 2 each batch, a batch every half a day (in the game), with up to 3 batches waiting. Happiness changes the wait: see The Herd.

Killing one teaches you 4 Jump experience (see Stats), always the same whatever your level.
